Cleaning out my closet…

Or wardrobe if you’re a Brit!

We’re getting nearer to the midway point of 2012. It’s scary. Time always frightens me now. Feels like when I was a kid each year took an age to get through, but now, since leaving school, I got to be careful not to blink for too long else I miss them altogether.

What a mare…

I made a decision a few weeks ago that I needed to get my website up and running. I’ve had the domain since the dark ages, and besides from a brief moment a few years back I’ve never had any content on it. My web design/editing skills have always been no more than basic, and while I’ve always tried to improve on them I always end up feeling a little lost.

I think my main issue is that coding always takes me back to my attempt at A Level maths. I was quite competent at Junior School and GCSE Level Maths. I’d always kind of enjoyed it so decided to take on at A Level… what a mistake that was. I couldn’t believe the jump in difficulty… it was like I’d decided to take up an almost forgotten ancient language.

I admire people who can look at things like this and make perfect sense of them!

My eyes looked at the sorts of equations we had to work with and my brain just melted. I just couldn’t get my mind around any of it, and it resulted in plenty of headaches and plenty more tears! I had to admit defeat (after numerous 0% marks) and drop out of the class. So now, anytime I see something that isn’t written in plain, perfectly formed English sentences my brain just says ‘nah’.

So… while I can get by forming a basic website (with the help of DreamWeaver and countless Google searches) I’m never able to recreate what’s in my mind on to a working webpage.

This is why I decided to give WordPress a try. I wanted a decent blogging platform which also allowed me to function it as a full working website. Up until now, I’ve only ever had a sort of website “hub” with links to other external sites I used, so it’s never been very well melded together, and that’s not what I wanted.

I tried the free WordPress.com website and while I was more than happy with the base it provides, I was unhappy with the limitations so I opted for WordPress.org and shelled out for my own webspace.

Being completely new to WordPress I’ve had my struggles; more than enough Google searches have been made to try and get my site to do what I want it, and I admit I got a bit disheartened when it looked like a lot of my issues could only be sorted with coding, but I think I’ve finally gotten there!

Fair enough, it still needs a few tweaks until I’m perfectly happy (will I ever be) but for now it’ll do! So huge thank you to every single person that seems to have struggled with the same issues I have and had the patience to ask someone else… you’ve saved me a few jobs!
